Fitzgeralds Hotel Donegal

Fitzgerald's offers guests ideal Donegal Hotel for those wishing to have an activity holiday in the West of Ireland. Bundoran is in the heart of Co Donegal, Ireland's second largest county. The region is famous for its wild and rugged landscape, miles of sandy blue flag beaches, golf courses, Atlantic coastline, salmon rivers and much more.

Sea Angling

Whether you're a novice fisherman, an experienced angler, or an enthusiatic sightseer, you can experience the thrills of deep sea fishing in the Atlantic.

Sea angling is a thrilling sport. Around the Donegal coast you can fish for Shark, Blue Fin Tuna, Conger Eel and plenty of other fish species. There are shipwrecks located off Donegal from the Spanish Armada and from the two World Wars.

Some of the larger islands, such as Arranmore, Owey and Tory Island have majestic cliff faces rising from the sea to 160 metres. Animal and birdlife abound. Smaller islands, like Rutland, Inishfree and Gola have sandy beaches which are peaceful, secluded places to go for swimming, walking, picnics etc.

These islands offer good fishing areas and sheltered fishing grounds away from strong winds so fishing can take place on most days regardless of wind direction.

Reef Fishing - April to October

Inshore Reefs are from 15 to 20 minutes from the harbour. They offer good fishing ground for Pollock, Ling, Ballan Wrasse, Cuckoo Wrasse, Haddock, Cod, Conger Eel, Mackerel etc.

Most fishing is done on the drift, over reefs with sandy ground between. Fishing over the sandy areas for flat fish is also done on the drift. If the drift is too fast, anchor is dropped with rubby, dubby.

Inshore bottom fishing depths range from 10 metres to 50 metres. This type of fishing can be done with light rods, 20-30lb class.

Shark Fishing

Blue Shark come close to the shore from June to September, when sea temperatures rise to 13/14°C.

Fish weighing up to 100lbs (45.4kg)are caught. This is the Irish specimen weight. Good bottom fishing can be had whilst fishing Shark.
