Below are just some of the many Visitor Attractions and Sight Seeing opportunities for guests to enjoy during their stay with us. Many are located in County Donegal and are just a short drive from Fitzgeralds Hotel, while others are slightly further afield but well worth the drive.

In County Donegal:

Carrowmore – this is the largest megalithic cemetery in Ireland, with over 60 tombs. The oldest of these predate Newgrange by some 700 years. A restored cottage houses an interesting exhibition relating to the site.

Donegal Bay Drive – Donegal Bay is touched by many different features and routes. The wild scenery and the central highlands are a feature of this spectacular drive. Every turn provides a spectacular view. This fascinating drive includes Slieve League, which are the highest marine cliffs in Europe rising over 606m above the ocean, bustling market towns, wild, primitive and historic glens. Also included is a detour to the ancient pilgrimage centre on Lough Derg. It is journey, which can easily occupy a full day.

Donegal Castle – a restored 15th century Norman Tower House, with the addition of a 17th century Jacobean Manor House. Features include Period Fireplace, Turrets, Curtain Wall and Gate House.

Glenveagh National Park – Some 14,000 hectares of mountains, lakes, glens and woods with a large herd of red deer. The central feature is a 19th century castle surrounded by the famous Glenveagh Gardens.

Newmills Corn and Flax Mills – A complex of industrial buildings which includes both corn and flax mills powered by the river Swilly. The visitor to Newmills can experience the pleasure of seeing one of the largest waterwheels in Ireland in action as it drives the machinery of the corn mill.

Glebe House & Gallery – Regency house decorated with Victorian William Morris wallpaper, textiles and works by leading 20th century artists.

In County Fermanagh:

Castle Coole – a magnificent neo-classical house designed by James Wyatt, family home of the Earls of Belmore. It has remarkably fine interiors and exquisite furniture and furnishings from before 1830.

Florence Court – One of the most important houses in Ulster, built in the mid eighteenth century by John Cole. The house has magnificent plaster work, the striking rococo dining-room ceiling was cleverly saved from the fire in 1955. The rest of the, plaster work has been meticulously restored.

Marble Arch Caves – Marble Arch Caves are one of Europe’s finest show caves allowing visitors to explore a fascinating, natural underworld of rivers, waterfalls, winding passages and lofty chambers.

Belleek Pottery – This World famous pottery offers guided tours and has a visitor’s centre. On the banks of the River Erne, on the border between Fermanagh and Donegal, lies Belleek, home of Ireland’s oldest pottery. For more than 137 years this little village has been famous for its distinctive parian china. Today Belleek holds a special place in the hearts of china collectors the world over.

Enniskillen Castle – incorporating The Regimental Museum, The Watergate History and Heritage Centre. The Castle also holds a variety of other exhibitions through-out the year.

In County Leitrim:

Parke’s Castle – A 17th century fortified manor house which has recently been restored using Irish oak and traditional craftsmanship. The courtyard contains the foundations and features of an earlier defensive structure.

In County Sligo:

Sligo Abbey – Known locally as the Abbey, the Dominican Friary was founded in the mid 13th century by Maurice FitzGerald. The site contains a great wealth of carvings dating from the 15th century and is well worth a visit.

In County Roscommon:

Boyle Abbey – An impressive and well preserved Cistercian Monastery which was founded in the 12th century under the patronage of the local ruling family, the MacDermotts. Though mutilated during the 17th and 18th centuries when it was used to accommodate a military garrison,
Boyle Abbey nevertheless retains its ability to impress the visitor as one of the most formidable of the early Cistercian foundations in Ireland. A restored gatehouse of 16th/17th century houses an exhibition. Restricted access for people with disabilities.
